May 11 Day Seven Last DayThe rains have stopped and we are packed and ready to head home. Before we leave for home we stoped by to see a grand lady in a harbor and then traced the footsteps of some of our ancestors at Ellis Island. Once back on solid ground we walked the financial district and the New York Stock Exchange and then visited ground zero. This has been a trip that many of our students should never forget. We had a awesome bus driver Rich who deserves a medal for his driving skills. We always felt safe with him behind the wheel. Our Worldstrides guide Bob was a who made our trip memorable. He grew up in the DC area so he shared his own experiences with us as well as our Christian heritage that has help to shape our great nation. The day ended with a long plane ride from Newark New Jersey to San Francisco to Portland. It was a great sight to see the parents and families welcoming us home. Now it is time to rest up and reflect on our great trip.
Day Six The Big AppleWet, Wet, Wet. No we are not back home in Portland, but we are in New York. It rained all day. One TV reporter stated that he didn't remember when he saw so many broken umbrellas on the street corners. We toured Central Park, Harlem, St. John the Divine Cathedral and then shopped 5th Ave. The evening climaxed with view the Phantom of the Opera. Our students looked great all dressed up. May 08 Day 5 Gettysburg and New YorkIt was an early wake call and down to the bus after breakfast. Everyone was on time and we were ready to leave DC before 8:00 am. We arrived in Gettysburg before 10:00 and were able to view the brand new vistor center/museum at a nice pace. This visitors center has been open for less than two months. We had a guide that boarded our bus and directed our group around the battleground and recounted the important movements and battles that occured during the three days of the battle. Students and adults each learned a lot. We then headed north east to New York and arrived after 6:00 and went to the Empire State Building and to the top. The Lord blessed us with great weather and the views were amazing. We checked into our new housing, The Sheraton Two Towers in Times Square. Lots of traveling today and lots to see tomorrow.
May 07 Day 4 Last Day In DCToday is our last day in DC and today we went to the Hill. We toured the Capital and met with our Senator Gordon Smith in person. We then went on and visited Arlington National Cemetary. We ended our day enjoy a program presented by the 3rd Infantry Old Guard US Army called Twilight Tatoo. It was a presentation using different periods in the history of the US Army. We observed the rifle drill team, drum and fife band and the fifty state flags. Tonight we begin to pack and get ready to move on to Gettysburg and then New York tomorrow.
